Ħal Lija Shines Bright in Annual Feast
The quiet charm of Ħal Lija was transformed last week as the village celebrated the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, also known as the Feast of Christ the Saviour. Held annually during the first week of August, the event drew thousands of locals and visitors for a week of religious devotion, lively music, and dazzling fireworks.
A week of devotion, tradition, and spectacular fireworks draws crowds to the historic Maltese village—plus a taste of local life at il-Mustaċċun Barber.
The celebrations centred on Our Saviour’s Church, a Baroque masterpiece dating back to the 17th century, where solemn masses and processions honoured the biblical moment of Christ’s transfiguration. Outside, the streets came alive with festa marches, traditional decorations, and food stalls serving local favourites.
The highlight, as always, was the spectacular Fireworks presented by the renowned St. Michael’s Fireworks Complex, established in 1925. Their elaborate aerial and ground displays lit up the Maltese sky, cementing Lija’s reputation for hosting some of the island’s most impressive fireworks shows.
il-Mustaċċun Barber
Adding to the village’s appeal is il-Mustaċċun Barber, located in the heart of Ħal Lija. This traditional yet premium barbershop offers expert, personalised haircuts while serving some of Malta’s finest coffee, selected beers, spirits and Spanish wines. Known for its warm atmosphere, it’s a place where locals enjoy quality grooming, a good drink, and conversations with barbers who truly know their clients.
